Hey Julian, this was done in 1978 after reading Lord of the
Rings for the 8th time, and before the Bakshi movie came out. I was always hoping to make a cartoon of it in my wildest daydreams.

Hullo Mr Jim. I like the squat chunky proportions on some of these guys. The ram-horned dude reminds me of an ewok - did George Lucus live in your loft conversion at any point between the time of the conception of this painting and Return of the Jedi? I know he likes to be "influenced".

I hope, for your sake, that the cartoon in your dreams didn't include rotoscoping. Like the waking nightmare I once had...

P.s. is there anything that should be in that white space, or are you just not into cropping?

Awesome illustration. Did you ever show this to Ralph, or did you just find it? Great colors.

Looks like a job for Chestacles. Seriously...two page splash in one of the comics, dude. You would melt faces, as Dewey from "School of Rock" would put it.

And oh yeah...it's nice John will get his Winsor McKay award from the Annies but if there was justice in the world you would be right there with him as co-recipient. He couldn't have made Ren & Stimpy the classic it was without you.

Weirdo, it was stored away in Dad's house for years - before moving to California. I left my portfolio at Ralph's during the Fire and Ice days, but he never saw it. This one was still back in Houston.

As for cropping, what the hell, it was a big file and took forever to paste and post on my little laptop.

Good idea Michelle, I'll get it in there somewhere. You know how I feel about awards - it's nice just to be nominated, wait - I wasn't even nominated! G*^%*^$#D(*%%ed Hollywood!

man, i'm LOVING the colors in that picture. is it watercolor, pencil or what?

also: i second that "G*^%*^$#D(*%%ed Hollywood!" comment. but i'm always up for Roscoe's waffles.

O, a double-edged sword if there ever was one.

Also, screw awards. You're goddamn Jim Smith! Enough said!

Did someone say ROSCOE'S????

Actually I want to take you to The Swingin' Door one Saturday for lunch. This is the BBQ joint that has OWNAGE over Dr. Hogly Wogly's. Saturday they do chickens. They aren't open on Sunday.

Yeah, Roscoe's is good, though. Good chicken. Good waffles.

YOU DREW THAT?!!

...O, you're killing me here, michelle! I wish was close by to all those kinda places. I live a few thousand miles from LA, so Roscoe's can only be a memory of a place I went to once....

despair.

You should show it to Ralph. I bet you he would love it.

You know I believe Kelly and used to have that up on our wall at one of our apartments some years ago and Kelly wanted to take it back to your parents house for you when you came in for a visit one year. I think it got misplaced there for a long time. I can remember staring at all the details in the picture. I've always liked that one.

little sister!

Veronica,
Hey baby sister, we had good time at Lake Somerville despite the rain. You and Kelly put together a great trip.
I remember this painting being at your house way back when you lived in Spring Branch. I was surprised to see it at Dad's. It is yours when I bequeath all the stuff.
