You should be the new artist for Conan. I think it would be cool if you were.

Weirdo, I have always wanted to - it was a dream but now Chestaclese is my own take on the whole Mythology and tall tales scene. Thanks for the kind.

That's a mighty swishy swish, Mr. Smith.

Did you do a pass at green monkeys?

Jimbo said...

We did the monkeys about 1998? Yeah it was passed around I guess. Who else took a crack? I guess it never made it to TV. There were some funny voices on the animatic.

I can't remember I who all had a crack at it, I just remember being surprised every time I heard some else was working on it.

We should have made it wrestling penguins.

Jim,

My name's Trevor and I've been known to lie, but this here's a true story.

I'm a huge fan. I haven't posted before because, honestly, I didn't know you were here until Kali pointed it out ( her links grab you moreso than John's ).

Is the Ripping Friends DVD still available? I'd be all over that.

My question for you is about your art style. Is it naturally similar to John's, or when you design characters with a project for John do you design in a way that's evocative of his style?

Thanks for the blog and the years of quiet inspiration!

Trevor, as far as I know the dvd is no longer available unless you can find it on e-bay. As for styles mine is more realistic but I have been trying to draw like John for years.

Jim, check THIS baby out. OK it's not really a baby but pretty darn close, if the baby was paper covered with awesome drawings.

Superior monkeys, and excellent forearm hair. I do so enjoy your blog Mr. Smith.

They're doing that new violent Age of Conan MMORPG but it looks so boringly photorealistic. What's the point, I ask you.

AWESOME Conan, he looks almost three-dimensional! I've got the impression that he's going to jump out of the screen and beat me up. Mr.Smith, you're a real master of anatomy, both male and female :)

Was this monkey sketch from the project that Spumco was developing or designing for Disney (Green Monkeys)? I remember some rumours about it during the late 90s, but never heard anybody mention it again. Can you please tell us more?

Trevor: there's a complete Ripping Friends DVD set that contains all the episodes, and it was released in Australia six years ago. I think it's still available, but you must have a multi-standard and multi-region DVD player to watch it (if you live in the US).

Chloe, thanks. I like the Conan stories more for the exotic locales and creepy atmosphere than the butchery and cleaving, though Howard's action was exciting in a pulp fiction way.

Hammerson, it was a proposal for a series from what I remember. Several others including Disney took a shot at it but I don't think it was ever produced. We did an animatic with some really funny voices, but I don't know where it is now.

Thanks! That was one of the most mysterious projects with Spumco involvement, and I never found any info before, except for the few references.

I was gonna say, that monkey drawing looks VERY Disney with a bit of Spumco thrown in for good measure.... now I know why!

It's nice to know somebody really "gets" barbarianism. That dog groomer is too cool! He's so limp-wristed his ankles are affected too. The jinglebells on his toes are the fruitiest thing I ever saw.

That's the gayest dog groomer I've ever laid eyes on.
